The Before Math

Before looking into SEO and how you can increase your traffic, we want to make sure the people that are viewing your content actually need what you’re offering, otherwise all of your hard work would be done in vain and I don’t want that for you.

All it takes is a bit of quick target market research to be sure you’re targeting the right people with your content.

When targeting the right people, search engine optimization will not only become a lot easier for you but you’ll find that it’s also a lot easier to monetize your blog too because then you’d have a target audience full of people who need what you have to offer and are willing to buy.

I bet you’re now wondering “perfect, how do I do the market research”.

It’s pretty simple. There are many different ways to conduct target market research but the easiest way to find out what content you should be creating to attract the right kind of people to you is to simply ask them.

You would be surprised how many people would be willing to openly tell you what they’d like to see on your blog. Compile a list and use that list to pull from whenever you’re creating content.

Now that you know for sure you are creating content that your audience wants and needs…it’s time to dig into search engine optimization so that you can start attracting them to you in droves by the thousands.

Search engine optimization basics:

The most important tip everyone should know when it comes to search engine optimization and how to make it work for you is to learn the power of keywords and key phrases.

When I say “key words” and “key phrases” I mean little pieces of gold. It’s the basis of how search engines (yep including Google) organizes each piece of content. Once you master using the right keywords within the right context, it’s only a matter of time before your website lands first page.

There’s many different ways to find key words that work for you and your niche, the first step is putting yourself inside your target audiences shoes. If you were them, what would you be typing into Google?

Think of different words and phrases your target audience would use or questions they would ask and then use that to attract them.

If you want specifics like:

  • Where do I look for my target audience to ask them questions
  • What specific questions do I ask them to get the answers I need
  • How do I know if a keyword will perform well
  • In what context should I be using the keyword/phrase for it to perform it’s best

How many Keywords or phrases do I use on one page?

The sky is the limit. Of course, there’s a right and a wrong way to go about this which we will dig deep into.

Now, I’m not saying to go and plaster a lot of words that mean the same thing into one post or on one page to rank in search engines.

The algorithm will eventually pick up on that especially if the keywords/phrases are not related to the actual content.

You want to use as many related key words and phrases as possible in a way that it fits into the content of your article or website copy.

The best way to go about this is to use long tailed key phrases: instead of a simple keyword, a long tailed key phrase is more than one word put together to either almost or fully form a sentence.

Again, we want to put ourselves in our target audiences shoes. Imagine what they’re typing into Google and use it as inspiration. (This is why doing market research the right way is so important.)

Example of a long tailed key phrase: “How to rank first page in Google”

Do I need an SEO Plugin?

This might trigger some people but no. I know a lot of bloggers will read this and cringe a little bit but the truth is, with or without an SEO plugin, with the right strategy you can rank in the same amount of time.

I’m sharing this from a place of love. I’ve had many clients express to me that they’ve tried everything to gain traffic and then they go on to say “I even installed Yoast SEO”. It’s not harming your traffic but it’s not making much of a difference either.

The same goes for any SEO plugin. Myself and many of my clients are living proof that you don’t need a plugin to boost your ranking. In fact, I don’t suggest it…because you can gain so much more powerful results with only a simple system put in place once staying consistent.

My strategies are based on what Google 100% tells us works.

How long does it take to rank first page?

How long does it take to rank first page on Google is the most famous question I’ve received from those who enroll in Search Engine Optimization 101 and I love answering this question because it allows me to help you set realistic expectations.

It takes Google between four days and six weeks to crawl (or index) a new site. There are a few people who have claimed their site has been indexed in less than four days but the average time period is around four days to six weeks.

Once Google crawls your site, you’ll then be searchable through the search engine. This means that you’ll be in the results but may not be on the first page just yet. Once your SEO results start to truly kick in, it’s averaged at about four to six months before you’ll start ranking first page.

This is all assuming you’ve found your flow and started implementing SEO effectively on your site and blog post.

What to do if SEO seems overwhelming?

If you just started studying search engine optimization or you’ve been working with it for a while…I completely understand how it can seem overwhelming.

Personalize your marketing strategy

I can’t even count on two hands how many times I’ve clicked on a great looking pin just to head over to their blog, and everything sounds robotic. Almost like, they’ve copied and pasted a script right off google.

You do not want that to be you, people will run from your website. It’s great to use guides as an example of how your marketing strategy should be, but you always want your readers to feel your personality.

Because your viewers can’t physically see you, there needs to be an indication that there’s actually a real person behind the screen that understands their problems and can actually help them. That indication is your personality. You can never have too much personality in your brand. It’s what makes your business stand out from all the copy-cats.

Spoon feed your viewers | Don’t be a salesman

One major mistake with my first two websites was that it was information overload. It was like I just kind of threw info products and prices at them as soon as they clicked on a link. I had a salesman mindset which came off as pushy. It wasn’t genuine, and my viewers could totally tell.

Treat your viewers as if they’re your babies (new born babies). They’re coming to your site for the first time, or reading your blog post for the first time so, this is all new to them. They’re hoping to learn something that they’ve never been taught before and they’re expecting you to teach it to them.

Here’s a check list that you should swear by:

1.) Build a relationship with your reader within the first few sentences. If you aren’t doing this, 9/10 of your readers are most likely clicking on to the next page without fully reading your content. They need to trust you. An example would be, “I want to help you because…..”

2.) After you’ve built rapport, jump right into the meat of your content. No fluff! I repeat, no fluff. It’s so annoying to read an entire blog post only to realize I didn’t actually take anything valuable away from it, and that it was all just a evil mind trick to get me to click on some pricey info product.

If you do this to your readers, they will most likely never read anything you post again. Which brings me to my next point…..

Give away a ton of free stuff

I know, it sounds crazy but trust me when I say this is a game changer.

There’s a ton of salesy people out there who will tell you “Put a price on everything.” Wrong!

Giving away valuable free content is the key to your success.

Not only will it drive an insane amount of traffic to your site, it will also build trust between you and your viewers. They may not buy the first time around but, after coming to your site for a while they’ll begin to trust that you’re not feeding them a bunch BS. So, when you do decide to present them with a sale, they’ll trust that their investment would help them out in the long run.

Give them proof

When it comes to buying a product or trying out something, nobody like to be first. I know, it’s tragic. Everyone want’s to know that someone else tried it out before them so they know it’s something they can trust.

How to give proof?

  • testimonials
  • analytics
  • reviews

This is not your show

It took me a while to realize that my website is not TheShannonShow.com. Yes, I’m running it but, it’s not about me even in the slightest. Unless you’re running a lifestyle blog (even then it’s tricky) nobody cares about your life. I know it’s sounds mean but it’s true.

Make your website all about them. What did they come to your site for? How can you help them?

Write everything as if you’re speaking directly to them face to face. As if it’s just you and your reader sitting down together for the first time.

Follow your visitors

I know, it sounds creepy right? But seriously, follow them!

When your visitors click off your site, that’s it they’re gone. There’s no way for you to keep in contact with them, like ever again.

Unless………….

You create opt ins for them. This way you will always be connected to them.

There is one major way to create opt ins for your visitors.

An email list. This is the most effective way!

And the last and most important thing is to make sure you place these opt-in EVERYWHERE!
